Breakfast Gives Memory a Boost

 

Easy Morning Meals - if you aren't a breakfast eater or are looking for some new ideas, here are a few quick and easy choices:

  • Oatmeal with sliced banana
  • Scrambled eggs sprinkled with low-fat cheddar cheese
  • Whole wheat toast topped with peanut butter and cinnamon
  • Vanilla yogurt topped with thawed frozen strawberries
  • An English muffin topped with a poached egg and sprinkled with low-fat cheese
  • Two low-fat toaster hash brown patties and a glass of apple juice
  • A sliced apple mixed with 1/2 cup of raisins and a small amount of peanuts

A failing memory is often attributed to the normal aging process. But a recent study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition reveals that some simple changes in the way seniors eat may have a positive impact on short-term memory.

The primary study finding was that consuming calories after an overnight fast improved the results of mental function tests.

Quite simply, The main message of this study reinforces the age-old advice about the importance of eating breakfast. On waking in the morning, the body has been without fuel for many hours. Breakfast provides the fuel that the body needs for many tasks, including those that rely on memory.
